A startup by IIITB alumnus gets center stage

Vidya Sagar, an IIITB alumnus who co-founded Spectronn, a wireless startup company, in 2016 is excited about the opportunity to join NTT DOCOMO in its 5G Open Partner Program.

Spectronn, a wireless startup company co-founded by an IIITB alumnus, has been invited by NTT DOCOMO to join its 5G Open Partner Program. Under the program, Spectronn will get the opportunity to demonstrate and test its cognitive mobile edge computing technology at DOCOMO’s 5G Open LabTM mobile test bed in Guam, US.

“This partnership opens up excellent opportunities for us to collaborate with one of the world’s foremost contributor to 5G. The NTT DOCOMO's 5G initiative is meant to attract various network services and application providers to test their solution in Open LAB 5G testbed. Spectronn will be testing our platform for the first time on 5G network. Since 5G is still emerging, this is a unique opportunity for us to understand upcoming 5G network, services and applications,” says Vidya Sagar, CTO, Spectronn and IIITB alumnus.

DOCOMO 5G Open Lab Guam will enable advanced technology partners to rapidly test and innovate in 5G related products and services designed for the U.S. market.

Founded in 2016, Spectronn stemmed from Vidya’s doctoral research on ‘Dynamic spectrum over multiple wireless access networks’. “Within two years of my PhD research, I realized that there is a lot to do in this domain. I along with my mentors decided to build end-user centric infrastructure addressing networking and computing needs reliably and consistently anywhere over any network,” says Vidya, who recalls his days on IIITB campus as transformative.

“I came to IIITB right after completing B.E. with one goal to get placement in an IT company. I was not expecting the kind of research opportunities I received here. I walked in as an engineering graduate and left as a researcher and a person who believed in himself and knew significance of research. This self-belief is still driving me. While my entrepreneurial journey has just started, the first entrepreneur I knew is professor S Sadagopan,” adds Vidya.
