Scalable Data Science and AI (ScaDS.ai) Lab

Founded in 2021 by Prof. Vinu E. Venugopal at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB), the ScaDS.ai Lab brings together students, researchers, and collaborators to form a vibrant research community dedicated to advancing Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and related domains.
Our vision is to create a distinctive research culture rooted in the Indian context while remaining globally competitive and collaborative. The lab provides a shared identity for researchers, enabling us to work collectively on cutting-edge challenges and to contribute meaningfully to the international AI research landscape.
Our key research areas include:
-
Reasoning in Modern AI Systems – Understanding how large language models reason, and mapping these processes to traditional reasoning algorithms and philosophies.
-
Neuro-Symbolic AI – Advancing hybrid approaches that combine neural learning with symbolic reasoning to design naturally explainable AI systems.
-
Big Data and Streaming Data – Developing scalable solutions to handle massive, high-velocity datasets in real time.
-
Scalable System Architectures – Designing architectures that can efficiently grow with the ever-increasing size and complexity of data.
-
AI Ethics and Policy – Exploring the politics of AI, advocating for non-biased, transparent, and responsible AI systems.
At ScaDS.ai, we believe that data means big data—sometimes humorously large by modern standards—and that scalable, explainable, and ethical AI is the way forward.
