The forthcoming sixth-generation (6G) telecommunication networks hold immense potential for healthcare, education, IoT, among others. With its potential to revolutionise economies, delving into the technical intricacies of 6G and standardisation is crucial. These intricacies also highlight the necessity for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to guarantee a responsible and inclusive deployment, tackling concerns such as privacy, security, trust, competition, consumer welfare, and sustainability.

Recognising the need for secure critical and emerging technologies, Australia and India have strategically strengthened their ties and aimed to enhance bilateral cyber cooperation. The Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership (AICCTP) acknowledges the pivotal role both nations will play in advancing these technologies. This collaboration aims to contribute to the creation of an open, secure, accessible, stable, and interoperable cyberspace in the Indo-Pacific region, aligning with international law.

With this context, the research consortium comprising the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-Bangalore), Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS), Australian Risk Policy Institute (ARPI) undertook a project titled ‘Ethical 6G – Identifying Elements of Ethical Framework for 6G and Creating Opportunities for India and Australia’. The project was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) under the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership (AICCTP) Grant.

The project has looked at the emerging 6G ecosystem from technology, standardization, ethical and regulatory dimensions including privacy, security, trust, sustainability, consumer protection and competition. It seeks to promote global discussions on such issues, strengthen ties between Australia and India with respect to 6G, including between researchers, businesses, and governments of both countries, and enhance cyber resilience and best practices in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Thus, this workshop will present the findings from the project and bring together diverse expertise including policymakers, academics and industry representatives to discuss different aspects of 6G. A special emphasis has been given on various risks that may emerge due to potential vulnerabilities in the 6G.
