From the Director's Desk:

December is the month when IIITB is busy with end semester examinations. This year was no different and this year, except the semester stretched out a bit longer than usual.  Nevertheless, by December 20, most of the students were already off on vacation.

MIIT (Myanmar Institute of Information Technology) mentored by IIITB started its flagship program namely BE (Hons) with 100+ students selected through intens competitions from across Myanmar started operations on December 14, 2015.

Let me wish each and every member of the IIITB family a VERY HAPPY, HEALTH & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2016!

  • At its meeting on December 22, 2015, the Institute Faculty Selection and Promotion Committee recommended the promotion of Dr. Srinath Srinivasa to Professor, and Dr. Meenakshi D' Souza and Dr. V. N. Muralidhara to Associate Professor, with immediate effect. 

  • Prof. V. Sridhar presented the paper titled “Two-sided Markets, Platforms and their impact on Economy” at the 4th CUTS–CIRC Biennial Competition, Regulation and Development Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya during December 12-13. The paper was selected as one of the best 3 papers for presentation in the session on Competition Reforms as a Tool for Public Welfare.


  • I-MACX Summit and Demo Day (Monsoon) was held on December 9. Dr. Mahesh Ramakrishnan - CEO, Nanobi Analytics was the Chief Guest of the event.

  • 48th Senate Meeting was held on December 9.

  • 62nd Special Meeting of the Governing Body was held on December 10.

  • "The HAMPI Learning Laboratory" was organized on December 11, by Integrated Design in partnership with Geodesign Hub and the Centre for IT and Public Policy (CITAPP), IIITB. The purpose of the Hampi Lab was to design a strategic vision that effectively addresses multiple stakeholder concerns and use the outcomes, in a longer-term, to enable, inform and guide development efforts in the Hampi World Heritage Area. The event saw participation of architects and planners, archaeologists and conservationists, and IT professionals from the government, academia and the private and non-government sector.

  • The BE (Hons) programme at MIIT is well underway now with the inauguration of classes on December 14. Prof. Sadagopan attended in the inauguration ceremony. The first semester courses are being taught by faculty and adjunct faculty from IIITB as part of the initial mentoring agreement for MIIT.

  • An internal half-day faculty workshop on Pedagogical Innovations was organized on December 18. The workshop, which was motivated by the Director, was a platform for faculty members to share their experiences on creative methods used for effective teaching and learning, and enhance teaching methodologies. Profs. Srinivasaraghavan, Sridhar Varadarajan, Debabrata Das, Janaki Srinivasan and Sujit Chakrabarty presented their experiences at the Workshop, which was attended by a dozen faculty members. The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Chetan Parikh.

  • The Institute Faculty Selection & Promotion Committee meeting was held on December 22.

  • Incubation Center Board Meeting was held on December 29.

Publication including Presentations

  • Neha Oraon (PH2013008) presented a poster titled "Study of ferromagnetic dot shapes for digital logic applications" at 18th International Workshop on Physics of Semiconductor Device (IWPSD 2015) held in J N TATA Auditorium, IISc, Bengaluru during December 7 - 10. Prof. Madhav Rao co-authored this paper.
  • An article titled "Does Computerization Reduce PDS Leakage? Lessons from Karnataka" written by Dr. Silvia Masiero (London School of Economics, U.K.), and Prof. Amit Prakash has been published in the Economic and Political Weekly, Vol. L No. 50, December 12, 2015.

  • The paper titled “A Techno-Economic Study of Wi-Fi Adoption in India” by Prof. V. Sridhar and Prof. Rohit Prasad (MDI, Gurgaon) was presented at the Second Regional International Telecommunications Society Conference, New Delhi held during December 13-15. At the same conference Prof. V. Sridhar presented another paper titled “Diffusion of Broadband: Growth models and comparison across countries”which was co-authored by Prof. Sunil Mani (Centre for Development Studies , Thiruvananthapuram)

  • The article titled “Imprisoned in the box” by Prof. V.Sridhar and Mr. Raja, S.R. (AVP, Persistent Systems) has been published in the Business Line on December 16. The article can be accessed at:

  • Prof. Ashish Choudhury presented his paper on Asynchronous Error-decodable Secret Sharing at ICISS 2015, held at Jadavpur University during December 16-20.   • The article titled “Diffusion of Broadband Internet in India: Trends, Determinants and Challenges” authored by Prof. V. Sridhar, and Prof. Sunil Mani (Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum), has appeared as a special article in the recent issue (December 19, 2015) of Economic & Political Weekly (EPW).   • Prof. Shiva Kumar Malapaka's article titled "Turbulence on a Fractal Fourier Set",co-authored by Alessandra S. Lanotte, Roberto Benzi, Federico Toschi, and Luca Biferale, has appeared in Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 264502 on December 29. The article is on Open Access.

  • The paper titled “Locally Potentially Equivalent Two Dimensional Galois Representations And Frobenius Fields Of Elliptic Curves” by Prof. Manisha Kulkarni, Prof. Vijay Patankar and C. S. Rajan has accepted in the Journal of Number Theory.

  • The paper titled “l - Class groups of cyclic extensions of prime degree l.” by Prof Manisha Kulkarni, D. Majumdar and B. Sury has been accepted in the Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society (JRMS).

  • The paper titledDiophantine Equations of the form F(x) = G(y) an Exposition by Prof. Manisha Kulkarni and B. Sury has appeared in the The Mathematics Student, Vol. 84, Nos. 1-2, January-June (2015), 135-155.

Faculty & Staff

  • Prof. Amit Prakash was invited to the "Regional Dialogue on ICTD Capacity Building for Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Development" hosted by United Nations Asia-Pacific Centre for ICT and Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP, at Incheon, Republic of Korea during December 1-4. The event was attended by representatives from national governments, industry, academia and civil society from over 30 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Prof. Ashish Choudhury conducted a 3 hour tutorial on Secure Multi-party Computation at Eleventh International Conference on Information Systems Security (ICISS 2015) held at Jadavpur University during December 16-20. The details are available at:

  • Prof. Jaya Sreevalsan Nair has received a grant of INR 10 lakhs/- for 12 months, from Foundations of Research in Health Systems (FRHS) for a project titled, “Visual Analytics of Child Malnutrition Data in India”. This project will be run by the Graphics-Visualization-Computing Lab (GVCL) and E-Health Research Center (EHRC).

  • Prof. Shiva Kumar Malapaka gave an Invited Talk on Large-Scale Magnetic Structures - Inverse Cascade of Magnetic Helicity” at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, Shanghai, China on December 22.

  • Shreyas Iyer (IMT2015018), Pranav Kedia (IMT2015518) and Vaibhav Aggarwal (IMT2015045) took part in the API Hack Day hackathon, which was conducted by Exotel, Postman, and Sendgrid on December 12. The team built a 2D game, and demonstrated it to the judges. The link for the project:

  • Anusha P. S. (IMT2012007) participated in the PB Code Inspire contest ( during October 30-November 1. The contest was live on the contest website during 6pm, October 30-11pm, November 1. It was an online programming marathon which had 4 programming questions of varying difficulty, which had to be solved in 6 hours.This contest was conducted by Pitney Bowes, especially for women in colleges across India, as an initiative to encourage women to showcase their coding skills and talent. Anusha was ranked 6th in the competition out of 1154 registered participants and won vouchers worth Rs. 5000/- and also was invited to participate in a film shoot for a promotional video for Pitney Bowes.
