Let me first wish each and every one of the IIITB family a great New Year 2016!
January has been hectic with the joining of third batch of Sponsored M.Tech Program for Samsung Research (Bangalore), and a new batch of Ph.D. scholars.
IIITB is launching an Analytics program for working professionals with UpGrad Technology.
IIITB has become the Mentor Institute for IIIT Dharwad from January 28, 2016.

ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Prof. Debabrata Das, Dean – Academics and R&D has received the Fellow of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) certificate on January 19. It is by nomination or by recommendation of at least two Fellows of IETE and review by a committee according to one's academic and other achievements. 

  • Aparna Lalingkar (PH2008902) has won the Indo-Israel bilateral PostDoctoral fellowship for doing PostDoc at University of Haifa. It is awarded by the Planning and Budget Committee of the Council for Higher Education of Israel for outstanding Post-Doctoral researchers from India and China. She has won it for the academic year 2016/2017. It is for the duration of maximum three years (October 2016 to October 2019). She will be joining University of Haifa on October 1, 2016 to work with Prof. Michal Yerushalmy.

  • “Open Innovation Challenge” was held on January 4 at Andhra University. The competition was to come up with the best model for making Vizag smart. Students were required to present their ideas on one of the following ideas 1) Energy, 2) Food & Water, 3) Safety & Security 4) Transportation/Housing, and 5) Telecommunications, 6) Education/Entertainment. The goal was to present a functioning prototype of a simple technology, process, or design that may enhance revenues, reduce costs, recycle waste, and save time for the whole ecosystem. The judges consisted of UC Berkeley Faculty, Senior Executives of IBM, Wipro, Cisco, HCL, Tyco and Paradigm Mtuity, Inc. At the end of the day, three Open Innovation Awards representing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were granted to the winners issued by UC Berkeley's Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation. Our students Ashish Jain (DT2015002), Masih Abhishek John (DT2015003), Prashant Aswal (DT2015004), Arnaj Das (MT2015029), Umang Luhadia (DT2015008) won the 3rd prize in the competition.

  • The "Swiss-Re Hackathon" was held during January 30-31. The theme for the hackathon was 'My Personal Risk Advisor'.  The Team Refugees (Abhijay Arora (IMT2012049), Anubhav Bharadwaj (IMT2012006), Lijo Johnny (IMT2012023)) won the first prize with the prize money of Rs 300000.
    Application (WaTBoT): An intelligent travel assistant that inspires travel. It leverages the intelligence of IBM Watson, enabling the users to interact with it via voice notes or text - ALL ON WHATSAPP! It 's made using 5 IBM Watson Services: Watson Personality Insights(from social media), Watson Tradeoff Analytics, Watson Speech to Text, Watson Natural Language Classifier and Watson Relationship Extraction. From air tickets to hotels, discuss with smart assistance from Watbot.  
    The Team Ideal Mix (Daksh Varshneya (IMT2012012), Prerit Jain (MT2012033), Pawan Dhananjay (IMT2012014), Amit Gupta (IMT2012003), Tanmayee Narendra (IMT2012046)) won the 1st Runner up prize with the prize money of Rs 100000. Events

  • The orientation program for Master of Science by Research-Ph.D. 2015 - 16 Term 2 was held on January 4.
  • The 3rd batch of Sponsored M.Tech. for Samsung Research (Bengaluru) Engineers was started on January 6.

  • SPICMACAY IIITB chapter presented Carnatic Violin Concert by Sangeetha Choodamani  Padma Shri Ms. A. Kanyakumari on January 6. Ms. A Kanyakumari was accompanied by H. S. Sudhindra and S. Srishyla. 

  • Graphics-Visualization-Computing Lab (GVCL) participated in the Bangalore Vis Workshop at IISc on January 9. Jaya Sreevalsan Nair and Prof. Vijay Natarajan (IISc) organized the event. Profs. T. K. Srikanth and Jaya attended the event with other lab members.

  • Lohri was celebrated on campus on January 13. As per the tradition, a bonfire was lit, students gathered around the rising flames and threw til (sesame) and peanuts into the fire.

  • FLAIR Program was held at IIITB during January 18 -22. IIITB conducted a training program on Moodle for teachers from Kerala as a part of the Fostering Linkages in Academic Innovation and Research (FLAIR) program, which is an initiative of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala.

  • IIITB Innovation Center found its new physical space in the previous men's hostel, on January 18, and the new space for the center was inaugurated by Prof. S. Sadagopan, Director (IIITB). 

  • The Seventh edition of Ramanujan Mathematics and IT 2016 (RMIT 2016) was held during January 21– 22. This year the conference saw talks by Prof. Ashish Choudhury (IIITB), Dr. Manoj Dixit (Mathworks India), Prof. Srinath Srinivasa (IIITB),  Prof. C. S. Rajan (TIFR, Mumbai), and Prof. R. Thangadurai (HRI, Allahabad) on Day 1; and Dr. Swarup Kumar Mohalik (Ericsson, India), Prof. R. Balasubramanian (IMSc, Chennai), Prof. B. Ramakrishna (HRI, Allahabad), ad Dr. Radhakrishna Bettadapura (Strand Life Sciences, India).

  • An MoU was signed with Huawei Technologies India Private Limited on January 25 to provide "Huawei Scholarship for Excellence" to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year iMTech students. Huawei was represented by Mr. William Zhao, COO, Mr. Gilbert Millicent Nathan and Mr. Satya. IIITB was represented by Prof. Sadagopan, Director, Prof. Debabrata Das, Dean - Academics and R&D and Prof. Tricha Anjali.

  • The 67th Republic Day was celebrated on campus, where Prof. Chetan Parikh was the Chief Guest. Students, faculty members and staff members participated in the celebrations. 

  • An internal workshop conducted by Prof. N. J. Rao to Faculty on National Board of Accreditation (NBA) on January 27.

  • Prof. V. Sridhar was a Panelist in the session on "Net Neutrality: Is it Good, Bad or Confusing for the Telecom Industry" at the 8th International Conference on COMmunication Systems and NETworkS (COMSNETS) 2016, Bengaluru, January 7.

  • Prof. Shrisha Rao gave an invited lecture on "Services Science and Services Computing" as part of the Distinguished Researcher Seminar Series at the Department of Industrial and Management Engineering at IIT Kanpur on January 8.

  • Prof. Sadagopan, Director attended a program on “Promote Women in Technology - Workshop” on January 19 at Intel India, Bengaluru.

  • Prof. V. Sridhar delivered a talk at a research seminar on “Techno Economics of Spectrum: Case of India” at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai, on January 20.
  • Prof. V. Sridhar was a panelist in the session on “Network Neutrality Regulation Across South Asia: A Roundtable on Aspects of Differential Pricing” organized by Observer Research Foundation, IT for Change and the Centre for Internet and Society, Bengaluru, January 22.
  • Prof. Sadagopan, Director attended as Chief Guest on the occasion of the International Customs Day celebrations by  The WCO ( World Customs Organisation) on January 27 at Customs office, Queens Road, Bengaluru. 
  • Prof. V. Sridhar was a panelist in the session on “Data Privacy”, organized by Data Security Council of India (DSCI) Bengaluru Chapter, Bengaluru, January 28.
  • Prof. Amit Prakash delivered a guest lecture on “Public Health Management and information systems” at the Center for Public Health, NIMHANS on January 29.

  • Prof. T. K. Srikanth delivered a guest lecture on "IT in Healthcare", at the Center for Public Health, NIMHANS on January 29.

  • Prof. Meenakshi D'Souza attended Microsoft Academic Research Summit in Pune held during January 29-30. She also represented IIITB in the All India Research Board meeting of ACM at the summit.
