1. Senate and Board approving the start of India’s first Masters Programme in Digital Society starting August 2015, in the education space
2. IIITB hosting India’s first Web Observatory (Professor-in-charge Dr. Srinath Srinivasa), in the research space, that was inaugurated by Prof. Wendy Hall, Fellow of the Royal Society and former ACM President
3. IIITB moving beyond Incubation into an Accelerator Programme in the Mobile Apps and IoT in the incubation space

Events
- IIITB announces a new two-year Masters of Science (Digital Society) programme. This is an interdisciplinary programme intended for candidates with any under-graduate degree who are interested in designing, developing, deploying and managing large ICT solutions for an inclusive and sustainable digital society. Positioned at the intersection of social science and information technology, this unique and innovative programme brings together insights from computer science, data science, information sciences, economics, management, sociology, political science and policy research. The key objectives of the programme are to:
- Create a group of professionals having a nuanced and multi-dimensional understanding of today’s information age
- Address the growing needs for capacities in government/corporate/development sectors that require competencies in both technological and social issues
- Promote innovation and entrepreneurial skills among students

- The third batch of the Special Training Programme conducted by IIITB with support from the Infosys Foundation was inaugurated on February 5 by Ms. Sudha Murthy, Chairperson, Infosys Foundation. The programme is designed to develop strong competencies in problem solving and programming in students hailing from socially disadvantaged or economically weaker sections of society from all over India. This 9-month long program culminates in a Post-Graduate Diploma in Software Development (PGDSD) of IIITB.
- e-Yanthra workshop was held on February 6.
- The 58th Meeting of the Governing Body was held on February 10.
- The 44th meeting of the Senate was held on February 11.
- Broadcom conducted an event WICEDbuild at the Institute on February 18, where there was a session on DIY (do-it-yourself) for all things in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. They kicked off a WICEDbuild competition. Mr. Rahul Patel, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Wireless Connectivity, Broadcom Corporation, Mr. Rajiv Kapur, Managing Director, Broadcom India attended the event along with 10 team members.
- The Web Sciences Lab, IIITB organized the launch event for the first node in India of the worldwide Web Observatory grid, on February 17-18. The Web Observatory is facilitated by the Web Science Trust, a global non-profit institution with a secretariat at the University of Southampton, UK. At present, the Trust leverages web science research resources of the 15 University labs affiliated with the Web Science Trust (WSTnet) including Brazil, China, Korea, Europe and US, and the existing partnerships with W3C and the Web Foundation. The key objective of the Web Observatory is to enable the discovery and sharing of data sets and tools with other observatories around world.
The two day event started with an official launch of Web Observatory, India by Prof. Wendy Hall, University of Southampton and Prof. S. Sadagopan, Director, IIITB. The launch was followed by talks by distinguished research scientists from both the academia and industry. These researchers discussed how Web Science is emerging along the various dimensions of other previously existing scientific domains, and how the social machines are impacting the society and also, new data management techniques for the big data on the Web were discussed. Around 80 people participated in the workshop from industry and academia. On the second day, a “Data Hackathon” was organized. Six teams took the challenge to solve the problems of polysemy synonyms and of identifying type of noun-phrases from a given co-occurrence graph of noun-phrases from Wikipedia 2006 dump of articles. - Mid-Term examinations were held during February 23-28.
- Confianzys organized an event called Secret Sauce on 'Managing Technology Products' on February 24 at IIITB. The session covered the differences in approach by product firms in the US vs. challenges for product firms in India as well as difference in IT services vs. product mind set.
- "The I-MACX Accelerator" was inaugurated by Mr. Rohith Bhat (CEO, Robosoft) on February 27. The I-MACX Accelerator is an intensive, 100-day acceleration programme. It focuses on nurturing the social and civic start-ups that are involved in the creation of such socially-relevant technology products and applications. The accelerator works with social start-ups that focus on: healthcare, education, agriculture and culture.
Also, increasingly the way in which the Institute engages with government is channelled through technology, which means there's a tremendous opportunity for entrepreneurs to build new, successful, and profitable companies that make the experience more like the consumer web. The accelerator also works with civic start-ups that focus on: government, community, and the interaction between the two. The I-MACX Accelerator aims to help such seed-stage start-ups get the financial, strategic, and operational support they need to succeed.

- The paper titled "MONTO: A MACHINE-READABLE ONTOLOGY FOR TEACHING WORD PROBLEMS IN MATHEMATICS", has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Educational Technology and Society. The authors of this paper are Aparna Lalingkar, Prof. Chandrashekar Ramnathan and Prof. Srinivasan Ramani.
- The paper titled " Service driven Dynamic Hashing Based Radio Resource Management for Intelligent Transport Systems", authored by Subha P. Eswaran and Prof. Jyotsna Bapat, has been accepted for the Springer publication in the Proceedings of the International Conference on Communication Technologies for Vehicles Nets4car -2015 to be held at Tunisia.
- The paper titled "Service Centric Markov based Spectrum Sharing for Internet of Things", authored by Subha P. Eswaran and Prof. Jyotsna Bapat, has been accepted for International Conference of IEEE Region 10-TENSYMP-2015 to be held in Gujarat.
- Sunil Kumar Vuppala’s (PH2009902) views on SMART GRID Research have been published in A&D MAGAZINE in Round Table article on "Revamping the power Industry".

- The American Mathematical Monthly (published by Mathematical Association of America) poses monthly problems for readers to solve. Reijul Sachdev (IMT2012036) was one of the few who solved the problem posed by Donald Knuth in the January 2015 issue.
- Sunil Kumar Vuppala and Prof. G. N. Srinivasa Prasanna presented a Poster titled "OPTIMIZATION OF ENERGY MANAGEMENT UNDER UNCERTAINTY”, at ACM IRISS 2015, Goa on February 5-7.
