From the Director's Desk:

The opening ceremony of the new main building of Myanmar Institute of Information Technology (MIIT), which IIIT is mentoring, was on October 31, 2015, and the ceremony was attended by the Vice President of Myanmar, Dr. Sai  Mauk Kham, to mark the bilateral technological cooperation between India and Myanmar. The admission to the first batch of BE (Hons) program of MIIT has been completed, and the classes will commence from December 14, 2015. The Post Graduate Diploma in Software Development (PGDSD) Program for Myanmar students was earlier inaugurated on May 5, 2014 at IIITB by Mr. Bhavesh R. Trivedi, the Deputy Secretary to Government of India (Development Partnership Administration), Ministry of External Affairs.

December is the month of finals and holidays. IIITB is geared up to end the semester and be prepared to welcome a new year. The devastating floods in Chennai over the last few weeks have cast a dark cloud, which will pass soon. IIITB's faculty and students have done their small bit in Chennai flood relief activities.

  • Prof. Ashish Choudhury will be first occupant of the prestigious Infosys Foundation Career Development Chair Professorship at IIITB.  He will occupy the Chair for three years, from August 1, 2015 until July 31, 2018. The Career Development Professorship is meant to help Assistant Professors advance professionally. To this end, it provides an annual grant of INR 10 lakhs that can be used for conference travel, establishing a laboratory or similar research facilities, journal subscriptions and membership in professional bodies, and supporting students.  

  • Prof. Dinesh Babu has bagged three research projects as PI: First, a project titled "Robust and fast Multi-object tracking and FPGA" (National Instruments R&D India); Second, "Human Behavior Analysis using Indoor Camera" (CAIR Bangalore, DRDO); and finally "Automatic prediction of communication skill in self-presentation interviews, video conference based interviews and group discussions" (Young scientist Scheme - Start up Grant, Engineering Sciences by SERB, New Delhi).

  • Under the guidance of Prof. Srinivasaraghavan G., our students Sumanth Prabhu (MT2014121), Harshad Gadkari (MT2014034), Rajendra Mishra (MT2014067) won 2nd prize in the online hackathon hosted on hackerearth by Exotel. The hackathon started at 25-09-2015 06:00 PM and ended at 12-10-2015 06:00 PM (18 days). The results were announced on November 9. The team was awarded a cash prize of INR 1, 00,000. The data science competition which saw a participation of 2119 people, was open to both students and working professionals. The problem was to predict the emotion (happy, unhappy, angry, neutral) associated with audio recordings of customer conversations. 


  • The paper titled “Experimental Evaluation of Network Telemetry Anonymization for Cloud Based Security Analysis” has got best paper award at IEEE Cloud Computing for Emerging Markets (CCEM) - 2015 held during November 25-27 at Vivanta By Taj, M.G. Road, Bengaluru. The authors of the paper are Sashank Dara (PH2014011), Bhanu Prakash Gopularam, Prof. Muralidhara V.N. and Nalini N.

  • Srishti, Incubating company of IIITB was chosen as one of the top 10 startups as part of the Intel-DST Innovate for Digital India Challenge. Out of 1913 entries, Srishti's AAPNA-SEVA went through the top 50 phase in Ahmedabad and the top 20 accelerator phase comprising of a 3 month program in Pune. The accelerator phase was provided in conjunction with IIM-A's CIIE (Centre for Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship) and UC Berkeley's Lester Center for Entrepreneurship during August 2015-October 2015. As part of the felicitation program for the top 10, invited to Delhi to attend an Intel event as well as got the chance to meet the Honorable President Shri Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on November 19. The Intel event comprised of many influential figures such as Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Communications & IT Minister, Mr. Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO of MyGov, Mr. Kiran Karnik, Mr. Vikas Jain and Ms. Debjani Ghosh to name a few. After the event, all the 10 startups went to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and had a 30-minute slot with the President, where they had a minute to convey their idea to him.

  • AppLift Datathon was a 24 hour data hackathon that was organised by AppLift and Venturesity during November 28-29. Team "Ideal Mix" (Prerit Jain (IMT2012033), Daksh Varshneya (IMT2012012), Tanmayee Narendra (IMT2012046), Pawan Dhananjay (IMT2012014) and Amit Gupta (IMT2012003)) won the first place, with prize money of Rs 50000. They worked on building a model which predicts the optimal bid value for the bidder such that the probability of his ad being displayed on the corresponding page and consequently being clicked is maximized. Team "Refugees" (Anubhav Bharadwaj (IMT2012006), Abhijay Arora (IMT2012049),  Akshay Jindal (IMT2012002), Parth Savjani (MT2014107) and Sanat Ramesh (IMT2012039)) won the third place with prize money of Rs 10000. The Refugees built a 2-tier recommendation engine based on user profiling. It would help in improving the CTR of AppLift by sending personalized ads. They worked on identifying users based on personal insights and filtering of apps based on live twitter sentimental analysis in the second stage.

Events

  • New canteen started functioning since November 2.
  • The first ever cultural fest INFIN8 – ALPHA was organised in campus during November 13-14. The fest started with a ‘Musical Night’ which was held on November 13. The following day was packed with events starting with the League of Fanatics, which was organised by the Comic Club. Groups were quizzed in different rounds on their knowledge of comics and movies, and winning teams received movie posters. The second event was the Treasure Hunt, organised by the ISOS Club. The participation for this event was overwhelming with over 40 teams taking part. The winning teams were awarded gift vouchers from Flipkart. The Magazine Club organized Just a Minute (JAM) event in Hindi as well as in English. Each contestant would be given a topic on which he/she would have to speak fluently for one minute. The rules got stricter with every passing round. The topics were extremely creative and everyone had a good laugh. This event was shortly followed by Smashdub, which was IIITB's own take on the current global obsession, 'Dubsmash'. Each team would be given a video for which the team would have to dub the audio with innovative dialogues. A Dutch Auction was organized by the Math Club. The event was competitive and participants really got involved in the auction. The only event remaining was a mystery event that no one but the organisers knew anything about. It was conducted in the MCR. It turned out to be an extremely entertaining event with small games like paper dance, dress up and stand-up comedy. The fest concluded with the acknowledgement of the clubs who organised all the events and the core team of organisers.

  • Interviews and written examination for admissions to Ph.D. program in January 2016 were held during November 17-18.

  • 61st meeting of the Governing body was held on November 21.

  • Ms. V. Manjula, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government, Department of IT BT and S&T, GOK joined as member of the Governing body on November 21.


  • The fourth Center for Data Sciences (CDS) workshop was organized on November 23 at IIITB. The highlight of the workshop was a keynote talk by Dr. Indranil Bhattacharya from IBM research on "Learning Networks from Data". Research scholars from associated labs presented their recent progress. The workshop also witnessed active participation of students as project demonstrators and as inquisitive audience. 

  •  "Our Metropolis" documentary directed by Gautam Sonti and Usha Rao was screened at IIITB on November 23 as part of the course HSS 102 – The City. The screening was followed by a discussion with the directors of the film.

  • As of November 30, 100% placement has been achieved for internships in Semester IV for the M.Tech. batch of 2016.

The conference proceedings will be published in Springer, 2015.
